    Talking Scrapping Boilers [Answers]

So I see some old threads about boilers but no real answers.

My uncle is a plumber and gave me a boiler.

He said you can have it but he strongly recommended taking it apart first.

Basically a boiler can bring you around £150 ($235) scrap value each.

Other than the steel/stainless steal casing there is high value inside.

    1. Copper Piping
    2. Special Type Of Copper Piece Which Is Worth £25 ($40)
    3. Brass fittings
    4. Stainless Steel/Steel Casing
    5. Copper Rods
    6. Copper Motors
    7. Gas Valves - Sell them as they are and don't scrap them. I recently pulled one like this here out of one.
    8. Aluminium Piping (Rare but can happen).

All the above is what I pulled out of one boiler alone and would net me £150 ($235).

How much parts are new to replace -

I suppose it would be rare for someone to find one but having family that are involved in plumbing helps

So being from Australia, not sure what a "boiler" really is. Is this just a hot water heater for shower, bath etc??

    Thanks.

Nice edit Dawsey! That makes things very clear!

I also see it's not cheap to fix one in England. Every part listed suggests replacement. Sorry weak joke.

Would the $235 be from parting it out, scrapping it, or a combination of the two? I have a boiler sitting in a garage right now. It isn't in good condition, but if I can get $235 for it, that's a lot better than the $15 at appliance price

O.K, so what you call a boiler, we here would call a "continueous flow hot water heater" meaning it doesn't have a storage tank as such.

    Am I right??

    Thanks.

A boiler replaces a forced air furnace. A boiler heats water thats feed to radiators in the house for heating. At least thats what I think of when someone says boiler.

235? If that were true, I'd be downstairs right now with the grinder and hack saw doing work lol. Cold shower in the morning? Who cares! I'm 235 bucks richer!

Dangit Hoss. I hope you pulled the copper and brass?

Otherwise that is all water heaters are worth, tin price.

I dug into my first water heater I ever got. Such a pita that I now just snip off what wires I can see, or sometimes I can snip and pull all of it.

And then of course I pull the valve and any copper. Did one yesterday that had copper fittings on the in/outlet. Never seen it that way before. Always see galvanized connected to a copper flex line.

Where were you hiding these 31 water heaters?

haha nice. Hey I found a few boilers that I think you and I might have to go in together on. I'll send a PM in a few.

That coil is a heat exchanger. I would assume they are aluminum as it transfers heat much more efficiently then copper. So being the lowest value of metal,
according to you, it is a waste of time trying to get it out.

    Joe,

Like I clearly stated the other day, in the other thread, that just because it is the LOWEST (for me) does not mean that I don't collect it, and cash it in. Heck, I even collect soda cans and cash them in too. I mainly do that because we drink a lot of code, mt dew, pepsi etc and it is all cans, so me as a recycler, recycle them.

In the post about that guys beer truck, what I was getting at, was depending on the price of aluminum of what it would be at the time, would be a factor if it is worth it or not.

It has been a while since I have turned in aluminum, because like copper, brass, wire, and batteries, I save it up.

Looks like my saw zall and grinder will be doing some more work now.

The heat exchanger is made of either aluminium or stainless steel but not because they transfer heat more efficiently than copper. Only silver is better than copper for this, the reason copper isn't generally used is because at the high temperatures it is subjected to by the flue gases it tends to warp as its expansion rate is much greater than aluminum and steel. There are a number of different boiler types. The older direct immersion heaters using heating elements, with a back boiler and side mounted immersion heaters, then the indirect heat exchanging boilers using heat exchangers with an optional heating element and the newer much more efficient condensing boilers which can easily be recognised with a plastic flue pipe to release condensed gases. Newer boilers generally have 2 heat exchangers. One is a large block at the bottom made of eitehr stainless steel or aluminium and the secondary one is a brick shaped stainless steel finned block weighing around 2kg. Older boilers may have a lower grade of stainless steel used for their primary heat exchanger as these had the problem of corroding over time as water vapour condensed in them. They also had ones made of copper.
